Dibru Sikhowa National Park


Located in Tinsukia, in the state of Assam in India, the Dibru- Saikhowa National Park is spread over an area of 350 square kilometer. Its location is between 27°30' N to 27°45' N latitude and 95°10' E to 95°45'E longitude. The park is located at a distance of 12 kilometers towards the North of Tinsukia town. The park is located at an average altitude of 118 meter. It is a biosphere reserve which is bounded by two rivers in the north named Lohit and Brahamaputra, and in the south Dibru river. The park is spread over Dibrugarh and Tinsukiadistrict in the state of Assam. The park consists of tropical moist deciduous forest,wetevergreen forests, grasslands and canebrakes. The park comprise of the largest salix swamp forest in the northeast part of India which is situated in the floos plains of river Lohit and Brahamputra. It houses many endangered species. The park has very rich fish diversity because of the auto stocking by river Brahamputra. It is one of the major hotspots of biodiversity. The park has many types of grassland and many of its parts are wetlands. The park is said to be a hotspot of biodiversity as it has mishmashes of semi-evergreen and deciduous forests wit swamps, cane and bamboo brakes.

The main attraction in the wildlife of the DibruSaikhowaPark is the White Winged Wood Duckwhich. The park is the natural habitat for this species. The Feral Horses which are wild horse of very bright color is one of the well-known species found in the park. DibruSaikhowa national park is very famous for the feral horses.

History
In the year 1890, this area was declared as the Dibru Reserved Forest. More area was added to the Dibru Reserved Forest in the year 1920 and the Saikhowa reserve forest was declared in the year 1929 and again in the year 1933 more area was added to the Dibru Forest reserve.  An area of 650 square kilometer was declared as wildlife sanctuary in the year 1986, finally 340 square kilometer area out of 650 square kilometer was declared as Wild life sanctuary in the year 1995. In the year 1997 an area of 765 square kilometer was declared as Dibru-Saikhowa Biosphere Reserve including 340 square kilometer of the Sanctuary area and in the year 1999, the 340 square kilometer of the forest area was finally declared as a national park. DibruSaikhowa has a unique habitat which has gone through thorough changes after the destruction caused to the place by an earthquake that occurred in the year 1950.
Best Time To Visit
The season that is considered to be best to visit the DibruSaikhowa national park is from the month of November to April. Weather is very pleasant during these months and one can spot the wildlife along with many other adventurous activities.

How to reach : The Park can be visited by staying at Tinsukiatown. The nearest airport to the park is the Mohanbari or Dibrugarh airport located at a distance of forty kilometers from the park. Tinsukia is at a distance of 500 kilometers from the park. The NH 37 connects Tinsukia to the Dibrugarh town and the distance between the two is only 55 kilometers. The nearest township of Saikhowaghat entry point is Dholla.

Species expected to be spotted:
Around thirty six species of mammals are found here which include elephants, tigers, jungle cat, leopard small Indian Civet, bears, squirrels, slow loris, gangetic dolphin, Rhesus Macaque,Assamese Macaque, Capped Langur, Sambar,Wild Pigs, Barking Deer, Feral horses, Hoolock Gibbon, Water Buffalo, etc.
Birds:
The park is an identified Important Bird Area (IBA) which has around 382 species of the birds. The popular bird species found here are Lesser Adjutant Stork,Greater Adjutant Stork, Greater Crested Grebe,Open bill Stork,Large Cormorant, Black necked Stork,Grey leg Goose,Large Whistling Teal, Grey-headed Fishing Eagle,Osprey,Griffon Vulture, Crested Serpent Eagle,White Winged Wood Duck,Baer's Pochard,Spot Billed Pelican, Greater Spotted Eagle,Great Pied Hornbill,Pale Capped Pigeon, Marsh Babbler,Black Breasted Parrot bill,Jerdon's Babbler, etc.
The park is also known for natural regeneration of the Salix Trees.

Weather
The cliate at DibruSaikhowais tropical monsoon type of climate. The summers are hot and wetand winters are usually cool and dry. The rainfall is between 2300 mm to 3800 mm. The rainfall majorly occurs in the months between June to September. The coldest temperature recorded on an average is 7°C and hottest temperature is 34°C. The hottest months are June, July and august and the coolest months are December and January.
