Galathea National Park



Introduction
This national park is situated in the UT of Andaman & Nikobar Island. Exact location of this park is in Nicobar Island (located in the Bay of Bengal).This park is spread over an area of approximately 110 kilometers.   During 1992, this park is declared a National Park through a gazette notification.   This park also includes another national park namely Campbell Bay, which is actually 12 kilometers far located from Galathea.
The richness of wildlife is found in Great Nicobar biosphere.   In this national park a number of species are found including endangered too.  These species include Giant leather back Turtle, water monitor lizard, reticulated python, endangered Nicobar Tree Shrews, wild pig, robber crab, Malayan Box Turtle, Palm Civet and Fruit Bat etc.

History
Total area covered by this national park is approximately 110 sqkm in Great Nicobar Island.  This park is considered an important place to preserve the Giant Robber Crab, Nicobar Pigeon including the fauna of the place.  In recent past this place has attained fast attraction by the tourist as picnic spot and the population of tourist increased in few years. The beauty of nature is spread all over the Island.  Major portion of Andaman & Nicobar Island is covered by dense forests.
Great Nicobar Island is the location of a big biosphere reserve named on the Island.  Thisbiosphere reserve is covering the area of approximate 885 sqkm. The establishment of thisbiosphere was done in the year 1989.  The location of this reserve is at a distance of 82 kilometers from the capital Port Blair.  The ancient tribe “Shompens” is the original tribe of this area.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit this area is in summer season.  Summer season in the sense, except monsoon as in this Island there is no winter season.  Being acute tropical climate, only two seasons are experienced here summers and monsoon.  In monsoon, heavy rainfall will hamper the visit as most of the area is covered with dense forest.  Muddy way will reduce the joy of tourism so it is better to come here from October to April.

The capital of Andaman Nicobar is located at 540 kilometers from Great Nicobar and one will have to cover a journey by sea of approximately 50 hours.   Except water waves, no other means is available to reach this national park.
How To Get There
To reach the national park one will have to starts its journey from Port Blair and cover 540 kilometers through water waves.  This journey will take approximately 50-60 hours. This place has some natural importance in the entire union territory of Andaman & Nicobar.  Great Nicobar is located at the south end of the union territory.   From this place water waves are only the means of transportation.

This place has the pride to be visited by the large number of tourists.  Various visitors across the world come here each year for exploring the mesmerizing beauty of nature spread in every corner of this island.  One of the finest beach in the world located adjacent to Galathea is very much inspiring and appealing for tourists due to its natural peace and beauty. 
Weather
Nicobar island is covered under a typical tropical climate thus only two seasons are witnessed here Monsoon and summers.  The mercury goes substantially high during the summer upto 300 Celsius.  It came down during monsoon and became pleasant but owing to heavy rainfall this time is difficult for making visits.  During rainy season, this area receives 3,000 to 3,800 mm rainfall as annual.   Most of the land area is great meadow .
