Mollem National Park


The Mollem National Park and Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary is spread over an area of 240 sq kms and is located in south india in the western ghats. It is a protected area in the Sanguem Taluk in Goa, just adjacent to the state border of Karnataka in the eastern side. The town nearest to the sanctuary and national park is Molem which is about 57 kms, towards eastern part of Panaji, which is the capital city of Goa. The area is divided into two parts by National Highway 4A while railway line of Mormugao – Londa passes across this wildlife sanctuary. The coordinates in which the national park is located are 74°10"15' to 74°20"15' E and 15°15"30' to 15°29"30' N. Plenty of temples are situated in the national park, which have been built during the Kadamba dynasty and the Dudhsagar falls are located inside. There is a community of Dhangar, which is a nomadic tribe of buffalo herders, which lives inside this parkland.

Birds – many popular birds are possible to be seen inside mollen national park which includes emerald dove, drongo, golden oriole, fairy bluebird, Indian black woodpecker, Indian hornbill, Malabar pied hornbill, Malabar grey hornbill, grey jungle fowl, grey headed myna, racket taileddrongo, paradise flycatcher, shrikes, ruby throated yellow bulbul which is the Goa’s state bird, Sri Lanka frogmouth, three toed kingfisher, wagtails, etc. A few birds are also seen which are endemic to the region of india, particularly to the southern part of india.
Mammals – Some of the mammals living in the wild are Bengal tiger, barking deer, bonnet macaque, leopard, civet, common langur, gaur, flying squirrel, mouse deer, Malabar giant squirrel, porcupine, pangolin, sambar, slender loris, wild boar, spotted deer and wild dog.
Reptiles – Snakes in Mollen national park have made it famous, especially the king cobra. There are other varieties also, such as Cat snake, bronzeback tree snack, Indian rock python, hump nosed pit viper, Malabar pit viper, Indian cobra, russell’s viper and common krait.
Butterflies – Many interesting species of butterflies are found in the region of the park which include common jezebel, blue mormon, common mime, common mormon, common wanderer, plum judy, lime butterfly, crimson rose, plain tiger, tailed jay, souther birdwing, etc. A few species are also found, such as tamil yeoman and Malabar tree nymph, which are specifically endemic to the region.

History
In the initial days, the area had the name of Mollem Game Sanctuary and in 1969 only, it was pronounced as the wildlife sanctuary, and then renamed as Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary. The inner area, was called as mollem national park in the year 1978, which was over an area of 107 sq kms. Regarding the flora and fauna of the place, the sanctuary has tropical evergreenforests making a pristine vegetation of the west coast, semi evergreen forests and deciduous forests of the moist qualities. Mostly in the higher altitudes, these forests are found as well as in the river banks. Species which are predominant in the region are Xylia, Terminalia, Dalbergia and Lagerstroemia. By making a canopy, the forest top is almost closed, without any spread of grass below or negligible. Water sources are in plenty in the sanctuary, which are perinneal flowing and therefore the wildlife have enough water sources.

How To Get There
From the Mollem National park, the Dabolim airport is the nearest which is at a distance of about 80 km. nearest railhead to the park is located at a distance of 6 kms from the national park and it is at Colem railway station. Tourists can travel from margao and panaji by taking taxis or local buses that are found in regular intervals.

Plenty of attractions are found in the sanctuary as well as the national park, which are mostly of cultural, geological and sightseeing purposes. Due to these attractions also, the national park is a protected area in Goa, among the popular destinations of sightseeing.
Mahadeva Temple, Tambdi Surla
This mahadeva temple is believed to have built in the 12th century, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and presently is a place thronged by worshipers regularly. This is a small temple, located at about east to the village of Bolcornem, at a distance of 13 kms, to which there is a single lane road which is paved, found in the park’s northern region. This temple has a antarala, garbhagriha and basalt used mandapa built with pillar in honor of Nandi. Each of the four pillars found here have plenty of carvings of elephants and the stone ceiling has lotus carvings, which are probably of Ashtoken variety.
Dudhsagar Falls
It is literary meaning an Ocean of Milk, and the dudhsagar falls is a large waterfall in the upper region of the mandovi river, along the border of Karnataka, towards the southwest region of the park and at a distance of about 10 km to collem village, located upstream. It is having a fall of 310 m and is labeled as the 5th tallest waterfall in the country and 227th in the world while for goa it is the highest. There is an Aqueduct of South Western Railways, which can be seen below the waterfalls. People can reach this destination after a 10 km hike along the dirt road or can also travel on a 4 wheel drive by hiring one at Collem. During the months of june and july during monsoon, it is dangerous to travel to this waterfall.
Devils Canyon
This canyon is carved downstreams of the dudhsagar falls, which is in the form of plenty of crevises, and created from rocks of solid nature because of the currents underwater in a serpentine flow. It is seen in the entry point of the trail near collem.
Tambdi Waterfall
At a distance of about 2 kms in a south eastern direction from Tambdi Surla, along the border of Karnataka, the tambdi waterfall is located and is as beautiful as dudhsagar falls but slightly smaller. Since the reach to this waterfall is a bit difficult as there are rocky and winding paths to this place. Those who wish to undertake the adventure can hire the local guide.
Sunset Point
From the sunset point there is a beautiful park view, which shows long areas of canopu treetops. From the mollem check points, hiring park vehicles, people can travel along the zigzag road to the sunset point

While on a visit to Mollem National Park in Goa, tourists are not to be troubled for need of stay, particularly in Goa. There is the Dudhsagar resort near Mollem, a few meters away from the entry of the national park. Plenty of rooms and rest houses as well as dormitories are arranged and maintained by the state government in the region, which are good preferences. For putting up a tent house in the campsite, tourists need to have permission from the range forest officer. Near the Tambdi Surla Temple, there are two private resorts namely the Backwoods and Shanti Nature Resort.
