Orang National Park


This is one of the finest national parks of the country and situated in Darrang and Sonitpurdistrict in the Assam. This park is spread over 78.81 sqml area.  The establishment of this park was done during the year of 1985 and the status of a National Park was awarded in April 1999.   This park is also famous as Mini Kaziranga Park.  As the two national parks has luckily the almost same type of landscape, streams and meadows inside.   Another similarity is that One Horned Rhino is inhabited in both of the national parks. The richness in flora and fauna also includes the likewise species.  Some wild buffaloes, pigmy hog, elephants and tigers are also found in this park.

The Brahmaputra River is also the natural habitat of rarely fund Ganges Dolphin. However, more than 50 species of fish habituated in the various water sources in the park.  Some of the migratory birds are also major attraction of this park like White Pelican, Shelduck, Mallard, Woodpecker and Bengal Florican.  It is easy and the possible activity to move around the sanctuary on safaris which have been arranged by the forest department of the state.  Jeep safaris are also the major popular means of travelling inside the park.  As the park is a natural habitat of dangerous species like tiger, leopards, elephants as well as reptiles like Pythons,Cobras etc so walking inside the park is not permitted. Travelling on jeeps/elephants is only the permitted source.

History
The history of this park is very critical.  Upto the year of 1900, this park was also the habitat of local hill tribes.  Later due to epidemic diseases, this area made vacant by the tribes. During 1915, the English Government nominated this park as games reserve.  This reserve was then come under command of state forest department to protect the tiger species. In 1992, the park was named as Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary but due to the protest of the locals, this decision was to be taken back.  Lastly this sanctuary was designated as National park in 1999 and a gazette notification to this affect was released as FRW/28/90/154 April 8, 1999.  It is well known fact that a forest reserve, a wild life sanctuary and a National park has the levels of maintenance.  In a national park the arrangements are done for survival of species very close to the nature.  No artificial provisions are made.  While in a wild life sanctuary, treatment bay for the species is generally not available.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit this park is from November to March.  One can get full utilization of his/her schedule if visit the park in above mentioned period.  The heavy rainfall is avoided, summers harshness is also avoided, though the weather in summers is not too hot.  Cool weather also provides mental relief to the visitors.

How To Get There
Location of this park is not more than 32 kilometers from important city Tezpur.  Visitor can easily access the park from any place.  Frequent bus services, taxi services are always available to reach at national park.
By Air: Tezpur is the nearest airport located at 42 kilometers from this park.  This airport is directly connected with Kolkata.  If the flights to Tezpur are not available, flight can be caught to reach Guwahati airport.  This airport is also a busiest air travel agency.  From both the airport, taxies can be availed at a minimal payment of Rs. 7 per kilometer. 
By Rail: Tezpur is also the nearest railway station.  Due to a busiest military station, frequent train transport for civilians is not easily available so better to reach Guwahati by any train and from there, one can get the trains for other parts of the country.
By Road:  Bus services of state government and private tour operators are regular from the Tezpur city.  The cost of one trip is cheaper and not more than Rs. 50 per head.  Government buses are preferred by the people as they are cheaper and reason being over crowded.

Wildlife
Fauna: This Park has the vast breeds of various species of mammals and other habitats.  One-horned rhino which is dominating this park, the Royal Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Elephant, Hog Deer and Wild Boar are some of the important species which has a natural habitat in this park.  Some of the typical species which are endangered are also habituating there.  Pygmy Hog ia small wild pig which is now countable on fingers in the Assam State, this specie is habituated in this national park.  Blind Gangatic Dolphin is also endangered species, Indian pangolin, Leopard cat are some other endangered species.  The Royal Bengal Tiger has been counted only 19 in the national park. 
Fishes:  Not less than 50 types of fishes have been recorded in various water bodies of the park.
Birds: Various types of birds like water birds, Game Birds, Predators and also a large number of migratory birds has their natural habitat in this national park.  Four types of birds are found in approximately 47 species in this national park and these are Ardeiae, Anatidae, Accipitridae and Addenda.  Officially 222 types of bird species have been recorded at this park.  Major birds are White Pelican, Spot-billed pelican, Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Mallard; Pintail and so on are sharing this park as natural habitat.
Reptiles: Various types of Tortoise and Turtles are fund here.  Vary popular type of turtle is Kachunga Tecta. The dangerous species like Pythons and King Cobras are also found in this park with enough numbers.    The dangerous most cobras are found here including Indian Black Krait, Rock Python.  Monitor lizard is also found here in large numbers.  In water bodies Iguana has also seen here.
Flora: This Park has the richest vegetation series among all the national parks of the country.   Some of the species especially depending on the forest are like, Bombax Cieba, Dalbergia Sissoo, Zizyphuss Jujuba and so on which only grew with the help of dense vegetation. The aquatic species of this park are Andropogon, Enhydra flushians etc.
Elephant Rides: This ride has a wonderful experience while visiting this park.  This experience is other than viewing the species living in their natural habitat.  The high back of elephant gives you the physical elevation as well as the elevation of your enjoyment is more than that.  Totally disconnection of any mechanical sound is one of the best experiences of life. 
Timings:
October to April is the best season to visit the park. Visiting is restricted to 7:30-9:30am and 2-3pm, the park gate remains closed in between.
Permit:
Advance authorization of the Divisional Forest Officer, Mangaldoi is essential to visit the park.
Accommodation
The two bungalows located here have the permit to stay at night.  Visitors can spend their nights here.  Though the place is not well equipped with modern living amenities but as adventure one can avail this facility.   Silbari bungalow is located just at the entrance gate of this park.  The very excellent wood carving has been done in this bungalow.  Another forest bungalow is also located at a distance of 5 kilometers.  The name of this residence is Sat Simul Bungalow.  Due to dangerous species habitat there, walking is banned and only jeeps are permitted inside the park.  Dormitory is also available there.
As a coming up project, a tourist lodge is proposed at Nalbari with the collaboration of Tourism department of the state.  There are some private hotels that provide accommodation to the tourist and a distance of 42 kilometers is not much more.  Transportation facility till the gate of park is also being provided by the private hotel owners.    Some of the hotels at Tezpuir which provide sufficient amenities to the tourists are Hotel Luit, Hotel Durba, and Tourist Lodge.  There are two more hotels namely Rowta and Mangaldai which also has good accommodation with all required amenities.  Camping is also can done in the park.  These caps are fully equipped.  This type of living in between the dangerous species is also a thrilling experience.
Weather
The three major seasons at the park are summer, Monsoon and winter.  Monsoon season is normally filled with rainfall. Harsh summer and then heavy rainfall and then chilled winter gives the climate a tropical flavor.  With this view, the pleasant season of winter in very adequate for visiting this place. The summer season lasts for four months starting from March to June.  The temperature of this area may raise upto 320 Celsius.  In the summer season the lowest recorded temperature is 200 Celsius.  The main source of rainfall in this region, are the south west monsoon.  In this period the area becomes green and young but due to extreme wet and muddy condition, the visit to the park is not adequate. Rainy season lasts here from July till September.
The three months December January and February are the best season to visit this park.  Greenery, scenic beauty and springs with calm and pleasant manner attract the visitors to come here time and again.  The temperature of this region during winter season is maximum 120 Celsius.  Woolen cloths will be required if a person visits this park in winters.
