Throughout the pre monsson, winter and half of the summers, one can visit Nagarhole. The months which are very pleasant are November to February, in case you are more of a person who don’t like hot and sultry weather. Though the summers are very hot, still it is the apt tiime to enjoy the sight of the wildlife which includes the tiger. During the hot and dry season (March to May) the animals meet near the lake, giving way to a very good wildlife view. It is better to avoid the monsoons (June to September) as the whole of the road network is washed out and the dense growth and leeches multiply in the forests.
How To Reach
By Air
The convenient and the most nearest airport is the Bangalore airport which is located at a distance of only 235 kms from the National Park of Nagarhole. This city is well connected to other big cities in India via many flights which fly daily.
By Rail
The nearest railway station is at Mysore which is just 95 kms away. Mysore is not only connected to Delhi but is also connected to other major cities through the trains which run daily. The tourist can either board the bus or hire a taxi in order to go to Nagarhole from Mysore.
By Road
Nagarhole is also well connected to all other surrounding neighbouring cities via the buses that runs in the state including Bangalore & Mysore. The rate per head from Mysore is around Rs 50/. Alternatively one can hire from any of the neighbouring cities a taxi.
Flora And Fauna
Flora
Here the vegetation which is dominant in the moist deciduous forest is consisting of Northern Western Ghats with rosewood and teak in the south part predominating. There is also a dry deciduous Plateau named the Central Deccan with thorny wattle and Pala indigo towards east. There are many Eugenia genus species that exists and also in the forest are few sub-montane valley swamp.
The trees which are mostly found here are the trees which important commercially such as silver oak, sandalwood, teak and rosewood. The dry deciduous forest trees species includes the axlewood, rosewood, Grewia tilaefolia, Indian Kino Tree, Lagerstroemia lanceolata (Crepe myrtle) and crocodile bark. The other species of tree that are found in these forests are few species of Ficus, Schleichera trijuga, cotton tree, kadam and Lagerstroemia microcarpa (Crepe myrtle).
The species which are found growing in understorey are beechwood, Indian gooseberry and kydia calycina, shrubs like Helicteres species, tick clover and horse nettles also invasiave species such as bonesets & lantana are found in plenty.
There are also remarkable species of trees like clumping bamboo, Flame of the Forest and golden shower tree in this forest.
Fauna
Mammals
Flagship species such as the Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), gaur or Indian bison (Bos gaurus) and tiger (Panthera tigris) are found in abundant in this park. There are also plenty of wild boar (Sus scrofa), four-horned antelopes (Tetracerpus quadricornis), barking deer (Munitacus muntjak), sambar (Cervus unicolor), chital (Axis axis), spotted deer, striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), sloth bears (Melursus ursinus), grey mongoose (Herpestes edwardsi) and jackals (Canius aureus) found in this park.
Birds
This park got recognised as the most important Bird Area as it has 270 birds species which includes the Nilgiri wood-pigeon (Columba elphinstonii), great spotted eagle (Aquila changa), the ‘Vulnerable’ lesser adjutant (Leptopilos javanicus) and the ‘critically endangered’ vulture Oriental white-backed (Gyps bengalensis).
Species which are near threatened like the red headed vulture (Sarcogyps calvus), greater eagle which is grey headed fish (Icthyophaga ichthyaetus), oriental white ibis (Threskiornis melanocephalus) and darters (Anhniga melanogaster) are found here. White bellied treepie (Dendrocitta leucogastra), Malabar grey hornbill (Ocyceros griseus) and glue winged parakeet (Psittacula columboides) endemics are found here.
Reptiles
The most common reptiles which are found here are the common toad (Bufo melanostictus), Indian monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis), Indian rock python (Python molurus), common krait (Bangarus caeruleus), Russell’s viper (Daboia russellii), bamboo pit viper (Trimeresurus gramineus), rat snake (Ptyas mucosus), common wolf snake (Lycondon aulicus) and common vine snake (Ahaetulla nasutus)
Wildlife
The park’s terrain is a perfect blend of the thick grasses, lush forests and many lakes, streams and many other such water bodies making it one among the country’s most attractive habitats in the wildlife. On Kabini river banks, which is flowing in the Nagarhole’s south boundaries on the fringes, one gets to see many varieties of animals basking and frolicking in the sun. Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary’s major attraction is the elephants, other attractions are many varieties of reptiles, bonnet macaque, sambhar, tiger, panther, wild dog, spotted deer and the sloth bear.
More than 250 colorful & rare avians are also found to be habitats of the Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary, the golden back parakeet, crested hawk, great Indian reed, woodpecker, alexandrine, crested serpent, bulbul and the babbler being the most prominent ones. The forest arrange for the mini bus safaris so as to get the maximum enjoyment of the wildlife attractions. They also allow private jeeps inside, but they have to be necessarily be attended by the forest department guide. Another biggest attraction for the tourists is the Elephant joy rides.
Timings
The National Park timings of Safari and Park are from morning 6 am to 8 am and in the evening 3 pm to 5:30 pm.
Where To Stay
The best option is to stay in a resort of hotel with basic amenities, when you are on a wildlife trip to India as you get to enjoy every bit of nature and experience the warmth and closeness of mother nature. There are also few accommodation options which are the best of Nagarhole wildlife sanctuary and without compromising on the feeling of being close to mother nature. The Kabini River Lodge at teh Nagarhole wildlife sanctuary is the best option, as this heritage hotel has got 7 twin bed rooms another hotel being the Jungle Inn, which is a luxurious hotel providing 4 swiss tents, three dormitories and 5 double bed rooms.
General Information
  • Entry fee for the park is Rs 50 for Indians & for foreigners it is Rs. 150/.
  • All the information in regards to the safaris & tourists facilities can be got from the office of the forest department which is situated at Hunsur.
  • The park is open every day from 6am to 8am & 3pm to 5:30 pm.
  • After 6pm the roads which lead to the park are closed.
  • Prior permission for trekking is required from the concerned authorities.
