This city derived its name from the God Hrishikesh.  This hill station is the beginning point of prestigious and holy Char Dham Yatra.  This station has a special place in the Hindu religion.  The station has a vital importance and faith among a number of devotees.  A large population of pilgrim visits this city every year. This hill station is ideal location fornature lovers.  Adventures activities like trekking,river rafting and mountaineering are famous activities of this hill station.  Number of people comes to this city for this purpose only.  Geographical location of this hill station is attractive.  This city is just at a distance of 25 kilometers from Haridwar. Three districts namely, Rishikesh, Swargashram and Muniu-Ki-Reti constitute this hill station.
It is a general belief that God showered his blessings over Rishi Raibhya and  and this place got its name as Hrishikesh. Later the same changed as Rishikesh due to pronunciation.  According to one more belief, Lord Rama took oath here to kill the Rawana.  Laxman Ji took the help of a jute bridge and crossed the river Ganga.  This happening is mentioned in Skand Purana.  Since then, the place called ‘Laxman Jhula’.  So many temples of ancient period are existing here.   It is believed that a small bath in the river Ganga at this place is sufficient to make a person sin free.

How to Reach
Three major ways are available to access this hill station
By Air
The nearest airport to reach this hill station is Jolly Grant airport which is located at 21 kilometers from Rishikesh.  Road transport is easily available from airport to Rishikesh.
By Rail
Rishikesh itself is the nearest rilway station.  Frequent trains are available to this hill station.  Road transport is also available from railway station.
By Road
Luxury and General Bus service is available from ISBT (Kashmiri Gate) Delhi at a regular interval.  This hill station is located on National Highway No. 58.  Badrinath also falls on the same highway.  Taxies and tourist cabs are easily available to Rishikesh from another part of the state.
Weather and Climate
This hill station has luckily the climate of continental type.  This type of climate provides a little winter throughout the year. During summer, average temperature of this station is 350 C. While in winters the mercury shuttles between 190C to 330C.
Time to Visit
Tourists can visit this hill station throughout the year.  It is suggested that only the month May should be avoided as the maximum temperature at this time reaches above 350 .  The adventure lover for River Rafting may visit this station between September to April every year.

Triveni Ghat
At this place, as a daily routine, the evening Aarti is performed. At this place, people also take a bath in holy river Ganga to make themselves sin free.
Bharat Mandir
This temple is the oldest temple of the city.  This temple is located at Jhanda Chowk.  Lord Vishnu received penance of Rishi Raibhya at this point. Basant Panchmi is also celebrated at this temple in very colorful manner. 
Rishikund
This is general belief that the holy water of River Yamuna soaked at this point as the same was requested by Kubz rishi.  An old Shani Mandir is also located at this point. 
Laxman Jhula
This bridge is the most attractive item of Rishikesh. This bridge was constructed during 1939 and has a length of 450 ft.   near this bridge, a very high temple is also located. 
Ram Jhula
This bridge makes a connection between Swargashram and the Ashram of Shivananda.  This Jhula is much longer than Laxman Jhula.
